The ambitious Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR), planned to stretch 133 kilometers from Ennore Port to Poonjeri near Mamallapuram, is all set to make important strides toward completion by the end of 2025. Progress is well afoot, especially on a key 30.8 km section running from the Tiruvallur Bypass to Sriperumbudur, according to sources in the Highways Department.

The work on this stretch is being handled by contractors L&T and SPK Ltd. L&T, which began construction in August 2021, has made impressive progress, completing 79% of its portion of the six-lane road. SPK Ltd. is also catching up, with roughly 50% of its section finished.

One of the project’s completed milestones is Section 4, which runs from Sriperumbudur to Singaperumalkoil. This section is fully done, and work continues to provide two-lane service roads for local traffic. However, land acquisition for the service lanes is still ongoing, particularly in areas where reserved forest land is involved. A proposal to swap the land is currently under review.

Meanwhile, the 27.41-kilometer stretch from Singaperumalkoil to Mamallapuram, part of Section 5, is progressing with land acquisition in its final stages. Financial tie-ups delayed the start of this stretch, but tenders will be floated soon. Initially planned as a four-lane road, this section has now been upgraded to a six-lane facility.

Section 1, which spans from Ennore Port to Thatchur, involves complex challenges due to the presence of 12 tanks and power transmission lines that need to be shifted, causing delays.

Once completed, the CPRR is poised to become the first access-controlled road under the Highways Department in Chennai. It will provide vital connectivity between major national highways: NH 5 (Chennai-Tada), NH 4 (Chennai-Bengaluru), NH 45 (Chennai-Tiruchi), and the East Coast Road, enhancing traffic flow and supporting regional development.
