Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced plans for an Olympic City and a separate Motor Sports City in Chennai, expanding the state’s ambitions in international sports.
Chennai to Get Olympic City and Motor Sports City
Chennai is set to take on a larger role in Tamil Nadu’s sporting ambitions, with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announcing plans for two major sports-focused developments in the city.
The first is an Olympic City, envisioned as a dedicated hub for athletes and high-performance training. The project is intended to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s medal prospects at future Olympic Games and other international sporting competitions.
According to the announcement made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on September 3, the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority will develop the Olympic City. The proposed facility will include international-standard sports arenas along with a High-Performance Training Centre.
Dedicated centres for sports science and sports medicine are also planned. These facilities are expected to support athletes through specialised training, performance monitoring and medical assistance. Accommodation for athletes and coaches, as well as modern sporting equipment, will form part of the development.
Separate Motor Sports City Planned
Alongside the Olympic City, the State government has announced a separate Motor Sports City in Chennai, aimed at developing the city as a destination for international racing events and motorsport talent.
The proposed complex is expected to have the infrastructure required to host Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 races. It will also provide training opportunities aimed at identifying and nurturing young motorsport talent.
The announcement comes as India continues to explore ways to expand its presence on the international motorsport calendar. A national task force formed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is examining motorsport development, including efforts to bring Formula 1 back to India.
Chennai’s Sporting Infrastructure Push
The twin announcements could give Chennai a broader sporting infrastructure ecosystem, combining elite Olympic preparation with professional motorsport facilities.
However, details such as the locations, project timelines, investment requirements and construction schedules for the two proposed developments have not yet been specified.
For Tamil Nadu, the projects represent an attempt to build long-term sporting infrastructure rather than focus only on hosting individual events. If implemented as proposed, the Olympic City could support athletes through a more integrated training and sports-science ecosystem, while the Motor Sports City could create a dedicated platform for racing events and grassroots talent development.
