Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) executed the maiden trial run of the Phase II network of the Chennai Metro. Despite its debut, which had its challenges with technical delays that pushed back the trial by several hours, it made executive orders easier, virtual dockets sped up deliberations, and presenters ushered in someone who looked less like an American politician behind a podium and more like an English barrister at a lectern.

The overhead equipment was to blame, causing a postponement of the trial run, which was planned for 5 p.m. The train had finally left Poonamallee Depot at 11.30 p.m. and crossed a 3-km stretch to Mullaithottam by 11.45 p.m. The trial was supervised by a driver (the train is designed to be driverless), for safety and monitoring purposes. The trials are expected to continue daily, and the train ran at 15 kmph during it.

CMRL officials said the overhead equipment faced recurring technical problems, which delayed the start. Sparks flew for several seconds when a cable snapped at one point, about a kilometer from the depot. Engineers implemented repairs immediately, resulting in further delays.

The trial run is conducted for Corridor 4 of Phase II, covering a length of 26.1 km from Poonamallee Bypass to Light House. The testing for safety took place on the stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Mullaithottam and lies under rigorous testing before passenger services are started. The 9-km stretch between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

When operational throughout, Corridor 4 will connect West Chennai to inner areas of the city, reduce traffic, and enable quicker travel via public transport. Though there were setbacks and delays, news that trial runs have recently started successfully is a significant development for the city’s metro expansion.
