The bustling neighbourhood of T Nagar in Chennai is set to witness a major infrastructure upgrade as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) prepares to inaugurate the city’s first steel flyover on September 28. The new structure, built at an investment of approximately ₹164.92 crore, connects South Usman Road with CIT Nagar First Main Road and is expected to bring significant relief to thousands of daily commuters.

Stretching 1.2 kilometres, the flyover is designed to decongest one of the city’s busiest stretches, where traffic snarls have long troubled residents and shoppers. The new bridge seamlessly links with the existing 0.8 km flyover, creating a continuous 2 km corridor that will enable motorists to cover the stretch within minutes. This development is particularly beneficial for those travelling between Saidapet, Guindy, Adyar, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, and Nungambakkam.

A key highlight of the project is its pioneering use of steel. At least 4,000 metric tonnes of steel were used, with concrete and steel integrated for durability and safety. IIT Madras conducted rigorous testing before certifying the flyover for use. Importantly, the construction did not require land acquisition, making it both cost-efficient and resident-friendly.

Work began in June 2023 but faced a six-month delay due to pending police permission to proceed with demolition and reconnection near Burkit Road. Despite the hurdles, GCC officials are optimistic that the project will transform traffic movement in the locality.

“This flyover is a long-awaited relief. Earlier, commuters would spend hours stuck in congestion here. Now, travel will be smoother, especially with encroachments removed and new roads laid,” said Sooriya Basheer from the T Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

Funded under the Infrastructural and Amenities Fund, the steel flyover marks a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Tamil Nadu government in Chennai. With the inauguration just days away, anticipation is high among residents, traders, and commuters who are eager to experience hassle-free travel in one of the city’s most important commercial hubs.
