Chennai is set to witness a major milestone in its urban infrastructure as the city’s first fully steel flyover in T-Nagar is nearing completion. Built at a cost of ₹131 crore, the flyover is expected to be thrown open to the public by the end of September, according to officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation.

The flyover, which spans 1.2 kilometres, runs from the South Usman Road ramp and connects to CIT Nagar 1st Main Road. Importantly, it links with the existing North Usman Road flyover, creating a continuous 2-km stretch that will provide much-needed traffic relief from CIT Nagar up to Panagal Park. This seamless connectivity is aimed at easing congestion in one of Chennai’s busiest shopping and residential hubs.

Designed as a two-lane bridge, the structure rises 6.5 metres above ground level and is built to last for nearly 50 years. Its engineering strength comes from 53 steel piers supporting wide girders, topped with a steel deck sheet and finished with a durable concrete and bitumen road surface. The design not only ensures long-term stability but also promises a smoother driving experience for motorists.

Work on the project began in March 2023 and has progressed steadily. Officials confirmed that more than 96% of the construction is already complete. The final touches, including road surfacing, median painting, and the installation of signboards, are now underway. Once completed, the flyover is expected to significantly cut travel time and reduce bottlenecks in the T-Nagar area, particularly around the bustling commercial streets.

Urban planners and engineers view this project as a technological leap in Chennai’s infrastructure, noting that it follows Tamil Nadu’s first steel flyover constructed in Marthandam, Kanyakumari district. With its opening, Chennai will take a big step forward in modern traffic management and sustainable urban development.

The much-awaited inauguration, likely to be presided over by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, will mark the beginning of a new phase of smoother, faster, and more efficient mobility in the heart of the city.
