Chennai Metro Rail’s long-awaited 27-storied central tower finally got environmental clearance the other day a significant turning point in the project’s timeline after the more than seven-year wait from its planning phase. Tamil Nadu State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority has approved the EIA Notification of 2006 for giving environmental green flag permission for starting the construction works before the end of the year.

It is an estimated expenditure of around ₹365 crore and stands 119 meters tall beside the Chennai Central Railway Station. It forms a constituent part of the overall development of Central Square, one of the primary traffic nodes and public domains. It is an amalgamation of commercial and recreational facilities for the use of people traveling and the community alike. Multiplex and retail outlets will be present on the first four floors of the tower, and for offices, 20 floors are planned with the use of most space in the tower. The two top floors of the tower will provide hotel facilities with an enthralling view of the city.

After seven long years of preparation, the eagerly awaited 27-storey central tower of Chennai Metro Rail finally saw environmental clearance the other day. The Tamil Nadu State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority cleared the project based on the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification of 2006. The sanction would allow work to begin within this year’s end.

Central Tower would be 119 meters tall and would cost an estimated ₹365 crore. The building will stand adjacent to the Chennai Central Railway Station. As a part of the overall development of Central Square, it’s a major traffic hub and public space. The complex is both commercial and recreational, catering to commuters and the general public alike. The first four floors will consist of multiplex and retail outlets, while the tower’s most significant space will be used for offices with 20 floors. The two top floors of the tower will have a hotel facility offering an exciting view of the city.

One of the highlights of this project is its seamless connectivity. The tower and Central Square are strategically located to provide easy access to multiple transportation options, including suburban rail services, MRTS, and two Chennai Metro Rail corridors, making commuting to key city areas hassle-free.

The construction of the tower will follow the completion of a 24,154-square-meter parking area that can accommodate 586 cars and 1,652 two-wheelers at a cost of ₹197 crore. The parking structure is already in place, ensuring adequate space for visitors and commuters.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials said the contractor will take possession of the site this month, and a small ceremony will mark the occasion. Full-scale construction will start thereafter after the design completion and approval process. The tower is going to be an iconic landmark, providing both functional spaces as well as leisure facilities for its residents and tourists.
