A large multimodal transit hub is being developed in the center of Chennai at Broadway, as part of a ₹567-crore infrastructure initiative to enhance urban mobility and intermesh multiple modes of transport.

Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited (CMAML), a public-private partnership company between Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), has entrusted BRL’s Indian subsidiary, Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd, with the job. The job is being done on behalf of Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).

Spread across 6.484 acres, the project includes the development of a Multimodal Facility Complex (MMFC) and the complete redevelopment of the aging Kuralagam building. The hub will offer seamless connectivity to the adjacent High Court Metro Station via new foot overbridges and subways.

The MMFC will boast a built-up area of 1.08 lakh square metres, featuring two basement levels, a ground floor, and eight upper floors. The Kuralagam building will be rebuilt with two basements, a ground floor, and nine upper floors, covering 22,794 square metres.

Combined, the entire project will span 1.36 lakh square metres of built-up space. It will include dedicated paratransit zones, internal covered pathways, and external pedestrian links to streamline commuter flow.

Key features of the upcoming hub include 73 bus bays across the ground and first floors of the MMFC, designed to accommodate a footfall of 3,250 people at any time. Ample parking has also been planned, with space for 433 cars and 1,174 two-wheelers across the MMFC and Kuralagam facilities.

Officials say the development is set to transform the congested Broadway area into a well-connected urban transport node, bringing together metro, bus, and pedestrian infrastructure under one roof.
