Bokaro Steel Plant unveils ₹20,000 crore expansion plan to boost capacity and jobs

Bokaro Steel Plant, one of the flagship units of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has unveiled an ambitious ₹20,000 crore brownfield expansion programme, marking a major step in strengthening India’s steel manufacturing capacity.

According to officials, the expansion will increase the plant’s crude steel production capacity from 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to nearly 7.5 MTPA. This capacity enhancement is seen as a strategic move to meet the country’s growing demand for steel across infrastructure, construction, manufacturing, railways, and industrial sectors.

As part of the expansion push, the Bokaro Steel Plant recently organised a day-long bidders’ meet titled “Connect Pro”, which witnessed participation from 17 domestic and international engineering companies, along with project consultants. The event was aimed at fast-tracking execution and building investor confidence around the large-scale project.

Senior officials said the discussions during the meet focused on multiple critical components, including brownfield expansion works, installation of a stamp charged coke oven battery, and development of Gua ore mines. These upgrades are expected to improve raw material security and operational efficiency for the plant in the long term.

The expansion is also likely to create a multiplier effect for the local economy. Apart from direct jobs within the plant, the project is expected to generate opportunities across logistics, civil construction, engineering services, raw material supply chains, and ancillary industries in and around Bokaro.

Industry experts believe the expansion aligns with India’s long-term steel growth roadmap and the government’s focus on infrastructure-led economic development. With demand for steel rising steadily, the move is expected to strengthen the plant’s contribution to the national production network.

The project is being closely watched by the steel and infrastructure sectors, as it could emerge as one of the most significant brownfield expansion programmes in the public sector steel space.
