Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro Project Reaches Key Milestone with DPR Completion

The long-awaited Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro project has taken a decisive step forward with the completion of its Detailed Project Report, signalling progress on one of Karnataka’s most ambitious urban transport initiatives. The inter-district corridor, proposed by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited, is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity once it moves into the execution phase.

Planned as part of Phase 4 of Namma Metro, the corridor will span 59.6 kilometres, linking Madavara in north-west Bengaluru to Nagannanapalya in Tumakuru. The alignment includes 26 stations and is designed to serve daily commuters travelling between the two cities for work, education and business. Tumakuru, located around 70 kilometres from Bengaluru’s core, has seen steady growth in population and economic activity, intensifying the demand for reliable public transport.

According to officials, the project has been pegged at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 20,649 crore, making it one of the most capital-intensive transport projects proposed in the state. The DPR consultancy was handled by R V Engineering Consultants at a cost of around Rs 1.2 crore. Following the award of consultancy in November 2025, the firm conducted extensive field surveys, technical assessments and preliminary alignment studies.

BMRCL officials said multiple evaluations are currently underway, including traffic analysis, travel pattern studies, data collection and initial geotechnical investigations. Discussions are also being held on possible future extensions of the corridor, depending on urban expansion and commuter demand. The feasibility report for the project had been submitted in May last year and subsequently cleared by the Karnataka government, paving the way for DPR preparation.

Transport planners believe the Bengaluru–Tumakuru Metro could reduce travel time, ease congestion on national highways and offer a dependable alternative to road-based transport. The corridor is also expected to support Tumakuru’s integration with the Bengaluru metropolitan region, strengthening economic and social linkages between the two cities.

While final approvals and funding clearances are still awaited, the completion of the DPR marks a critical milestone. Once operational, the metro line is expected to transform inter-city commuting in southern Karnataka and reinforce the state’s focus on sustainable, mass rapid transit solutions.
