Bengaluru will soon get major relief from severe traffic snarls, as a 21-kilometre stretch of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) is expected to be completed by March 2025. Connecting to the major traffic and road networks across the State, this strategic corridor will directly link Hoskote to the Tamil Nadu border, with instant access to the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway (BCE) and a much-needed alternative route for commercial vehicles.

The 288-kilometre STRR project aims to completely devote Bengaluru by 2027 to Greater Bengaluru. When completed, it will help to shift long-distance traffic away from the city centre and make urban traffic more manageable and will shorten travel times between major cities such as Chennai and Mangalore. It also aims to improve logistics efficiency in commercial transport.

Key infrastructure in this section includes eleven underpasses to enhance safety, an 11-metre-wide median mimicking Bengaluru’s NICE Road and a six-lane traffic flow design. And, environmental factors have also been taken into account since the stretch in question will traverse the BNP Eco-Sensitive Zone that will be mitigated during the acceleration.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started the tendering process for the last five packages of STRR, cumulatively measuring 144.25 kilometers and set at an estimated price of ₹4,749 crore. This is a critical expansion in completing the ring road that will cover Bengaluru.

Importantly, a stretch of a few kilometers of this STRR and BCE will travel on the same carriageway from Hoskote onward, where SRR will branch off towards the Hosur side. Given that it’d provide high-speed travel with safety, the NHAI has laid a speed limit on this route (120 kmph for vehicles and 100 kmph for buses).

(October 17) The much-awaited STRR is expected to revolutionize the traffic flow within Bengaluru’s city limits and offer a well-aligned connection to the Bangalore-Chennai Expressway as well as enable seamless transit to and fro from interstate routes, ameliorating the traffic ills that have been part of the city’s daily routine.
