Bengaluru Overtakes Mumbai To Become India’s Second-Busiest Domestic Airport

Bengaluru Airport has emerged as India’s second-busiest domestic airport after surpassing Mumbai in domestic passenger traffic during April 2026. According to data released by the Airports Authority of India, Bengaluru handled 3.28 million domestic passengers during the month, compared to Mumbai’s 2.89 million passengers, creating a gap of nearly 3.9 lakh travellers.

The development highlights the changing dynamics of India’s aviation sector, where capacity expansion and infrastructure availability are playing a major role in determining passenger growth. While Mumbai continues to hold the second position overall when international passenger traffic is included, Bengaluru has firmly established itself as the country’s second-largest domestic aviation market.

Mumbai Airport handled approximately 4 million total passengers in April, including international travellers, compared to Bengaluru’s 3.68 million passengers. However, industry experts believe Bengaluru’s domestic growth momentum is likely to continue due to its stronger infrastructure capacity and ability to accommodate additional airline operations.

A major factor behind Bengaluru’s rise is its dual-runway infrastructure, which has enabled airlines to add more flights and frequencies with greater operational flexibility. In contrast, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport remains heavily slot constrained. Much of the future growth from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is now expected to be absorbed by the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which commenced operations in December 2025.

Despite the shift in rankings, Delhi Airport continues to dominate the Indian aviation landscape and remains the country’s busiest airport by a significant margin. Bengaluru’s performance nevertheless reflects the city’s growing importance as a technology, business and investment hub, attracting both corporate and leisure travellers from across the country.

The increase in passenger traffic also underlines the rapid economic growth of Bengaluru and the continued expansion of its information technology, startup and manufacturing sectors. As airlines continue to expand networks and passenger demand remains strong, Bengaluru Airport is expected to strengthen its position as one of India’s most important aviation gateways in the coming years.
