The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is gearing up to redevelop the 15-acre Anna Nagar Tower Park with ₹30 crore to receive a vibrant makeover. Soon to come in the park are new fountains behind the iconic 133-foot tower, play equipment for children and renovated toilets, as well as a cleaner pond that hosts some 2,000 fish. Cleanup, including algae removal, will also be performed in the pond and a fresh coat of paint will be applied to the tower.

TGC will plant about 1,000 Miyawaki trees to increase the greenery. The park’s footpaths, working for more than 2,196 metres, will be ripped up and reconstructed. A ladies’ gym will also be set up and visitors can avail free Wi-Fi at 11 locations. Responding to previous complaints about insufficient seating, GCC is to install 100 benches park-wide.

GCC officials were informed by Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran that the two new toilet blocks with eight toilets each for men and women would be built. “Currently, tenders are being floated to hire a housekeeping agency which would deploy three security personnel and 14 sweepers,” he said. The shift is intended to respond to recent complaints about the park’s inadequate upkeep and minimal amenities.

Parking has become a significant concern, with thousands of visitors flocking to the park on weekends. Residents complained about a shortage of adequate parking facilities. GCC, in turn, is evaluating measures that could limit the number of people at the tower, such as an admission charge. It would deter long-lasting stays at the summit, allowing for a more steady stream of visitors.

The proposed improvements will enhance Anna Nagar Tower Park’s attractiveness as an ambitious, cleaner, greener, and better-managed space for residents and tourists.
