The Andhra Pradesh government has given its approval for the construction of the Chilakapalem–Ramabhadrapuram–Rayagada (CRR) road, a key infrastructure project aimed at strengthening connectivity between North Andhra and the neighbouring state of Odisha. The project, estimated at around Rs 1,172 crore, is expected to play a crucial role in improving regional mobility, trade movement, and overall economic activity in the region.

The CRR road will be developed under the public-private partnership hybrid annuity model, a framework that balances risk between the government and the private developer while ensuring timely execution. The 131-kilometre-long corridor will connect the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Parvathipuram-Manyam with Odisha, providing a smoother and faster transport link for both passengers and freight traffic.

Officials said the project forms part of a broader plan to develop three major road corridors in North Andhra. However, only the CRR road received final approval as the remaining two proposals, Vizianagaram–Palakonda via Rajam and Kalingapatnam–Parvathipuram via Rayagada, did not meet the required commercial viability benchmarks. Detailed project reports were prepared for all three roads by the Roads and Buildings department, with the CRR corridor being identified as strategically important.

Construction activity is expected to begin shortly, with the project designed to significantly reduce travel time and improve road safety along the corridor. Once completed, the road is likely to support agricultural supply chains, small industries, and regional trade by enabling easier access to markets in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

The approval of the CRR road is also seen as a catalyst for development in the relatively underdeveloped northern districts of Andhra Pradesh. Improved connectivity is expected to attract private investment, enhance logistics efficiency, and create employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases.

With infrastructure development remaining a priority for the state government, the CRR road project marks an important step toward building stronger inter-state transport networks and promoting balanced regional growth in eastern India.
