AM/NS India Secures Approval for Rs 80,000 Crore Greenfield Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has received environmental clearance and land allotment for setting up India’s largest greenfield steel plant in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh. The project marks a major milestone in the country’s industrial growth, with an initial investment of Rs 80,000 crore.

According to company officials, AM/NS India has been granted 2,200 acres of land in Rajayyapeta village, paving the way for construction of an 8.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant. The company, a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, had submitted its proposal to the state government in August 2024 and plans to commence work within this calendar year.

The upcoming plant will be developed in phases. In the first phase, AM/NS India will establish the 8.2 MTPA facility. Subsequent expansions are planned to raise the total capacity to 24 MTPA, with an overall investment exceeding Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The state government has assured full support, expediting clearances, and ensuring land allotment without delays — a process that typically takes years but was completed in just 14 months.

To secure raw material supply, AM/NS has finalised an agreement for iron ore transportation from the Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh through a slurry pipeline. The company already operates a 267 km pipeline from Vizag to Bailadila and will now lay an additional line parallel to it. This pipeline project aims to minimize truck movement, reducing both pollution and dust emissions during transportation.

ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal lauded the Andhra Pradesh government’s efficiency, stating that the company was “impressed by the speed of approvals and support provided to set up this world-class project.”

This mega steel plant is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs, significantly boost the regional economy, and strengthen India’s position in global steel manufacturing. With Andhra Pradesh emerging as a fast-growing industrial hub, the AM/NS project is poised to become a cornerstone of India’s steel infrastructure expansion.
