The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to submit its expert report on Bengaluru’s proposed second international airport within the next few days, according to Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister MB Patil. The project, aimed at easing future air traffic congestion and supporting the city’s rapid growth, is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Karnataka’s aviation infrastructure.
In April, an AAI technical team conducted site inspections at two potential locations — one along Kanakapura Road in Bengaluru South and another near Nelamangala-Kunigal Road in Bengaluru Rural. The expert report, now in its final stages, will play a key role in helping the state cabinet identify the most suitable site for the project.
Minister MB Patil noted that the decision will not be arbitrary but based on multiple parameters including financial feasibility, passenger density, industrial development, and future demand. “Once the AAI report is received, it will be discussed by the cabinet before a final decision is taken,” he said.
The Minister hinted that AAI may recommend both sites for consideration, following which airport construction companies will evaluate the financial and operational feasibility of each location. “It’s not that the airport will be built wherever the government allots land. Every aspect will be examined carefully,” he added.
Patil also pointed out that an existing clause prevents the establishment of another international airport within a 150-km radius of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033. However, he emphasized that initiating groundwork now would ensure the new airport is operational by then. “A project of this scale takes at least five to six years to complete,” he said.
Currently, only Delhi (Noida) and Mumbai (Navi Mumbai) have two international airports in operation or under development. Karnataka intends to consult developers of those airports to gain insights into planning and execution.
The Minister further mentioned that the government is aware of Tamil Nadu’s proposal for an airport at Hosur, near the Karnataka border. Legislators from North Karnataka have suggested Tumakuru, while others prefer South Bengaluru. The final decision will hinge on passenger convenience, connectivity, and long-term regional growth.
