Saint-Gobain plans to invest ₹11,000 crore in India over the next five years, accelerating its expansion in the construction materials market as demand grows for energy-efficient buildings and integrated building solutions. The French multinational’s investment programme will focus on manufacturing capacity, product development and strengthening its presence across key construction materials segments.

The planned investment represents a significant increase in the company’s capital deployment in India. Saint-Gobain invested approximately ₹9,900 crore in the country over the previous decade. Its new five-year commitment raises the average annual investment from around ₹990 crore to ₹2,200 crore.

Building an Integrated Construction Materials Business

The company is looking to move beyond selling individual products towards providing integrated solutions that improve building performance. Its portfolio includes glass, insulation materials, construction chemicals and other building products designed to improve energy efficiency, indoor comfort and acoustic performance.

Sreedhar N, Senior Vice-President and CEO for Asia-Pacific and India, is leading this strategy. The company sees opportunities to expand its presence in insulation, construction chemicals and gypsum boards, particularly as demand for modern building materials extends beyond commercial developments into residential construction.

Acquisitions remain another part of its growth strategy. Saint-Gobain completed its $1.025 billion acquisition of Fosroc in February 2025, strengthening its construction chemicals business. The deal added 20 manufacturing plants and expanded its presence in India. Businesses including Chryso, GCP and OVNIVER have also contributed to the company’s broader construction chemicals platform.

Tamil Nadu Remains a Key Investment Market

Tamil Nadu continues to play an important role in Saint-Gobain’s Indian operations, with ₹5,400 crore committed to projects in the state. The company operates 82 plants across India and has an innovation hub in Chennai employing around 300 scientists.

The Chennai facility develops products suited to local requirements and supports research and innovation. According to the company’s stated figures, its research activities have generated 275 patents.

India is also becoming an important manufacturing and export base for the group. Locally produced stone wool has qualified for the Australian market, while higher-value glass products are exported to Australia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Focus on Future Building Materials

Saint-Gobain’s expansion comes as the construction industry increasingly explores materials that can improve energy efficiency and reduce building weight. The company sees potential in developing alternatives to conventional heavy materials, including bricks and cement-based products.

However, replacing traditional construction materials on a large scale remains a longer-term ambition rather than an immediate outcome of the investment programme.

With its ₹11,000 crore commitment, Saint-Gobain is positioning India as a key market for manufacturing, innovation and future growth. The next five years will show how effectively the company converts its investment plans into additional capacity, new products and a wider market presence.
