
Visakhapatnam Port is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with the Centre approving a ₹334.89-crore internal flyover aimed at improving cargo movement and reducing congestion within the port premises.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has cleared the project, which will involve construction of a 3.584-km elevated corridor connecting Convent Junction with the Dock Area. The flyover is expected to create a smoother route for vehicles and cargo while separating road traffic from rail movement inside the port.
The project addresses a long-standing operational challenge at the port. Nine major railway level crossings currently experience frequent closures because of heavy train movement. According to the ministry, these crossings witness around 18 gate closures every day.
The repeated closures can lead to vehicle queues, longer waiting periods and higher fuel consumption. For a port handling large volumes of cargo, such interruptions can directly affect the efficiency of cargo evacuation and increase vehicle operating costs.
The proposed elevated corridor is designed to reduce these road and rail conflicts. By allowing road traffic to move above the railway network, the project is expected to provide more consistent access to the dock area and improve the movement of goods within the port.
Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the project would address a critical bottleneck at Visakhapatnam Port and help improve cargo movement and overall operational efficiency.
Beyond the flyover itself, the project includes associated civil and electrical works, utility shifting and safety installations. A five-year maintenance component has also been included.
Construction will be planned in a way that limits disruption to ongoing port operations, particularly around critical dock areas. The project is scheduled to be completed within 30 months from the date construction begins.
The investment comes as ports increasingly focus on improving last-mile and internal connectivity to support faster cargo evacuation. Efficient movement within port premises is important not only for reducing delays but also for improving the competitiveness of logistics operations.
For Visakhapatnam Port, the new flyover could therefore become an important piece of infrastructure, particularly by removing recurring conflicts between road vehicles and railway operations.
