Tamil Nadu Pushes Cross-Border Metro Link Between Hosur and Karnataka’s Bommasandra

The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to actively pursue a cross-border Metro rail project connecting Hosur in Krishnagiri district with Bommasandra in neighbouring Karnataka, marking a significant step towards improving regional connectivity and supporting industrial growth in South India.

The proposal was announced by Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson while presenting the Tamil Nadu Budget 2026–27 in the Legislative Assembly. According to the Budget, the state government is working with both the Government of India and the Karnataka government to secure approvals for the ambitious Metro rail corridor.

The proposed Metro line is expected to strengthen connectivity between Hosur, one of Tamil Nadu’s fastest-growing manufacturing and industrial centres, and Bommasandra, a key industrial and technology hub on the southern outskirts of Bengaluru. Thousands of employees commute daily between these two regions, and the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time while easing traffic congestion on the busy Hosur-Bengaluru highway.

Hosur has witnessed rapid industrial expansion over the past decade, attracting investments from automobile, electronics, engineering and manufacturing companies. Improved Metro connectivity is expected to further enhance the city’s attractiveness for new investments by offering faster and more sustainable urban transport. Better mobility is also likely to benefit industries by improving workforce accessibility and reducing dependence on road transport.

Apart from the Hosur-Bommasandra proposal, the Tamil Nadu government is also seeking Central approval for three important Chennai Metro Rail extensions. These include the Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam corridor, the Koyambedu-Pattabiram route via Avadi, and the Poonamallee-Sunguvarchathiram corridor via Sriperumbudur. These proposed extensions are aimed at improving connectivity to emerging residential, industrial and commercial clusters across the Chennai metropolitan region.

The cross-border Metro proposal reflects Tamil Nadu’s broader infrastructure strategy of strengthening regional transportation networks while supporting economic development. Improved public transport connectivity between neighbouring states is expected to enhance labour mobility, encourage industrial collaboration and support long-term urban development.

Although the project is currently at the proposal stage and requires approvals from both the Centre and the Karnataka government, industry stakeholders view the initiative as an important milestone that could reshape connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. If implemented, the Metro corridor would become one of the country’s significant inter-state urban transport projects, reinforcing South India’s position as a major manufacturing and technology destination.
