The Kerala government has decided to rope in geotechnical experts to examine issues emerging along the under-construction National Highway 66 (NH-66), a move that comes amid growing public concerns over certain stretches of the state’s largest road infrastructure project.

The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Public Works Department Minister P.K. Basheer, where officials assessed the progress of NH-66 and discussed measures to address technical challenges reported from various project locations.

According to officials, eight geotechnical agencies have already been deployed at different points along the highway corridor. The expert teams, led by specialists including G.V. Rao and T.K. Subhash, will conduct detailed inspections and recommend corrective measures wherever required.

Stretching 642 km through Kerala, NH-66 is one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades currently underway in the state. The corridor is expected to improve connectivity between major urban centres, ports, industrial zones and logistics hubs while reducing travel time across the state.

Government data indicates that 519 km of the project, representing around 81 per cent of the total corridor, has already been completed. Authorities are now targeting completion of the remaining sections within the next year.

The latest review reflects the government’s effort to ensure that technical concerns do not affect the long-term durability and safety of the highway. Public discussions around slope stability, drainage systems and construction quality in certain stretches have intensified in recent months, prompting calls for greater technical oversight.

The meeting also reviewed the status of land acquisition, which remains a key factor in the completion of several infrastructure projects across Kerala. District administrations have been directed to expedite pending acquisition cases through dedicated teams and time-bound action plans.

Kerala is simultaneously seeking greater support for future highway development. Minister Basheer is expected to meet Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to push for additional National Highway projects and investments in the state.

For Kerala, the successful completion of NH-66 is considered critical not only for improving mobility but also for strengthening logistics efficiency, tourism connectivity and regional economic growth. The findings of the geotechnical review are expected to play an important role in shaping the final stages of the project.
