Andhra Pradesh is aiming to strengthen its position in global trade and logistics, with State IT and Industries Minister Nara Lokesh pitching the state as India’s gateway to the emerging Arctic logistics network.

Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026, Lokesh highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s strategic advantages, including its nearly 1,000-km-long coastline, six operational ports and several upcoming port projects. He said the state is well positioned to play a crucial role in connecting India’s hinterland with global markets through new maritime trade routes.

Addressing the session on New Frontiers in Global Logistics and the Arctic Logistics Framework, Lokesh noted that changing global trade patterns and geopolitical developments are creating opportunities for alternative shipping corridors. According to him, Arctic shipping routes are becoming increasingly important as they can significantly reduce cargo transit times and improve supply chain resilience.

The minister said Andhra Pradesh’s location on India’s eastern coast gives it a unique advantage in supporting future trade movements between India, Russia and other international markets. He also stressed that the state’s growing port infrastructure and logistics ecosystem can help support India’s expanding manufacturing sector.

Lokesh further highlighted that Andhra Pradesh has attracted nearly 25 percent of all investments announced in India over the last two years. He said the state is emerging as a major destination for manufacturing, exports and logistics-led growth.

On the sidelines of the forum, Lokesh also held discussions with Russian aluminium giant RUSAL regarding future investments in Andhra Pradesh. The talks focused on expanding the aluminium value chain in the state and exploring opportunities for downstream manufacturing.

The minister invited RUSAL to consider establishing aluminium smelting facilities alongside the existing alumina refinery operated by Pioneer Aluminium Industries, where the company acquired a 26 percent stake in 2025.

Industry observers believe Andhra Pradesh’s continued focus on ports, industrial corridors and logistics infrastructure could further strengthen its position as one of India’s leading manufacturing and export hubs in the coming years.
