The proposed Twin Tunnel Road project in Bengaluru is set to become one of the most closely watched infrastructure developments in Karnataka, as Adani Enterprises awaits approval for its bid under the public-private partnership model. The project is expected to be among the first major decisions facing DK Shivakumar after assuming office as Chief Minister of Karnataka.
The ambitious 17-km tunnel road is planned to connect Hebbal and Silk Board Junction, two of the city’s most congested traffic corridors. With an estimated project cost of ₹17,698 crore, the initiative is being positioned as a long-term solution to Bengaluru’s worsening traffic challenges.
DK Shivakumar, who has consistently championed large-scale urban infrastructure projects during his tenure as Bengaluru Development Minister, has repeatedly maintained that road widening alone cannot address the city’s growing mobility demands. According to him, underground connectivity through tunnel roads offers a viable alternative for reducing travel time and improving traffic flow.
Adani Enterprises emerged as the lowest bidder for the project and has reportedly begun preliminary survey and soil testing activities. However, the proposal still requires multiple approvals before construction can commence. The bid is also reported to be higher than the government’s initial project estimates, making Cabinet approval a crucial next step.
The project has generated significant debate among urban planners, civic groups and political stakeholders. Supporters believe the tunnel road could transform Bengaluru’s transportation network and support future economic growth. Critics, however, argue that investments should be directed towards strengthening public transportation systems rather than promoting private vehicle infrastructure.
The outcome of the project will be closely monitored by the construction, infrastructure and real estate sectors, as it could influence future public-private partnership projects across Karnataka. If approved, the Twin Tunnel Road would become one of India’s largest urban underground transport infrastructure projects and a defining development in Bengaluru’s evolving mobility landscape.
