Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has approved ₹1,427.61 crore for the construction of a four-lane Thiruvarur bypass on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of NH-83 in Tamil Nadu. The 14.9-km highway project is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce congestion in Thiruvarur town and support safer movement of vehicles across the delta region.
The project also includes the construction of two additional road over bridges on NH-129A and NH-134A. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the bypass will strengthen connectivity between Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Karaikal and Nagapattinam. This is expected to benefit commuters, freight movement, temple tourism and local trade.
The proposed bypass alignment will begin from Adiyakkamangalam-Thandalai and pass through Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugalur, Elavangarkudi and Anaivadapathy Colony. Once completed, the project is expected to divert through traffic away from busy commercial and residential areas of Thiruvarur.
The ministry said the bypass would cut travel time by about 15 minutes and improve road safety by reducing traffic pressure inside the town. It will also improve access to SH-23, SH-65 and the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple, one of the important cultural and religious landmarks in the region.
The Thiruvarur bypass is significant for Tamil Nadu’s road infrastructure as the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur corridor supports movement between key towns, ports, agricultural belts and tourism destinations. Improved road connectivity can also support logistics, local businesses and future development along the corridor.
Along with the approval, Gadkari reviewed national highway projects covering 4,335 km in Punjab and 3,332 km across Delhi and Haryana. He directed officials and contractors to speed up execution, maintain timelines and improve coordination across projects.
The minister also stressed the need for better construction technologies, improved riding quality, regular inspections and stronger maintenance accountability. He instructed agencies to strengthen advance monsoon preparedness measures to protect highway infrastructure and ensure seamless connectivity.
