Proterial India has announced a major investment of Rs 1,350 crore to set up the country’s first amorphous electrical steel manufacturing facility at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. The project marks a significant milestone in India’s push to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities in critical industrial materials.

The upcoming plant will manufacture advanced amorphous electrical steel, also known as amorphous metal, which is widely used in transformer cores. This specialised material plays a vital role in reducing energy losses during electricity transmission and distribution. Compared to conventional electrical steel, amorphous steel can lower transformer core losses by up to 30 percent, improving overall grid efficiency and lowering lifetime operating costs.

The company has partnered with Shirdi Sai Electricals, which will hold a 26 percent equity stake in the venture. The collaboration is expected to support seamless integration of the finished material into India’s transformer manufacturing ecosystem. By enabling local production of a high value steel grade that is currently largely imported, the project aligns with national efforts to promote self reliance and reduce import dependency.

Beyond manufacturing, the investment is expected to create more than 500 direct jobs once operations begin. The facility will also strengthen regional supply chains by providing a reliable domestic source of advanced electrical steel for transformer manufacturers and related industries.

Industry observers believe the project will enhance the efficiency and sustainability of India’s power infrastructure. As demand for energy efficient equipment rises alongside renewable capacity additions and grid expansion, the availability of domestically produced amorphous steel could prove strategically important.

With final approvals and implementation timelines to be coordinated with relevant authorities, the Sri City facility is poised to become a cornerstone in India’s evolving high technology manufacturing landscape.
