₹506.48-Crore Vattiyurkavu Junction Project in Thiruvananthapuram Heads for Tender Proceedings

The ₹506.48-crore Vattiyurkavu junction development project in Thiruvananthapuram has reached a key milestone, with tender proceedings scheduled to commence this month. The ambitious infrastructure initiative is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility in one of the capital city’s busiest corridors. Construction work is likely to begin by February 2026, following the completion of the tendering process.

The project has received funding approval from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, underlining the state government’s focus on upgrading critical urban infrastructure. The development covers a 10.8-km road stretch connecting Sasthamangalam to Vazhayila, with a planned width of 18.5 metres, aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety for commuters.

Land acquisition for the first two stretches of the project has been largely completed, with nearly 99 percent of existing structures already removed. This has paved the way for faster execution once construction begins. In addition to road widening and junction improvements, the project also includes the relocation of electric, water and sewerage utilities, at an estimated cost of ₹13.63 crore.

Implementation will be carried out through two special purpose vehicles. While the Kerala Road Fund Board will oversee the junction and road development works, the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority will handle rehabilitation activities. As part of the rehabilitation plan, around 2.31 acres of land has been acquired to resettle affected traders. New commercial spaces and supporting facilities are being developed for 58 traders who were displaced during the land acquisition process.

Local representatives have highlighted the project’s wider economic impact. According to Vattiyurkavu MLA V.K. Prasanth, the junction development is expected to strengthen local infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support trade and commercial activity in surrounding areas. With improved road conditions and better traffic management, the project is also expected to enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

Once completed, the Vattiyurkavu junction development is set to emerge as a critical urban infrastructure upgrade for Thiruvananthapuram, aligning with Kerala’s broader vision of planned, sustainable city development.
