Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has called upon India’s real estate sector to play a responsible and forward looking role in supporting the country’s ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. Addressing the national conference of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) in New Delhi, Shah said the Modi government has laid a strong foundation for world class infrastructure and sustainable urban development over the past decade.
He noted that the government’s focus on next generation infrastructure has significantly transformed India’s urban landscape and created long term opportunities for economic growth. According to Shah, flagship initiatives such as the National Infrastructure Pipeline have strengthened core urban infrastructure and provided a clear roadmap to position India among nations with the best infrastructure standards globally.
Highlighting policy reforms, Shah said the removal of sectoral bottlenecks and consistent reform measures have accelerated growth across industries, including real estate. He pointed out that the introduction of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority has emerged as a globally recognised framework that protects homebuyers, enhances transparency and improves construction quality. With more than 1.55 lakh projects and over 1.10 lakh developers registered under RERA, the sector has gained greater credibility and institutional strength.
The Home Minister also underlined the benefits of GST reforms, noting that reduced tax rates on affordable housing and construction inputs have helped lower project costs and improve affordability. Measures such as 100 percent foreign direct investment through the automatic route and the ₹60,000 crore National Urban Housing Fund have further strengthened the real estate ecosystem.
Shah said India’s urban population is expected to rise to nearly 40 percent by 2035 and close to 50 percent by 2047, placing a significant responsibility on developers. He urged CREDAI, which represents nearly 13,000 developers across 230 cities and 21 states, to lead the way in promoting affordable, eco friendly and inclusive housing solutions.
Emphasising sustainability, Shah said green building norms, rainwater harvesting, water recycling, scientific waste management and energy efficient designs should become standard practice. Increasing green spaces within projects, he added, would improve environmental outcomes and support afforestation.
Calling CREDAI a pillar of reliability and ethical practices, Shah said a collaborative approach between government and developers is essential to build future ready cities and realise the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
