NHAI Invites Bids for ₹1,241-Crore Elevated Corridor Between Maduravoyal and Poonamallee

Equipped by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), tenders for the construction of an elevated, six-lane corridor starting from Maduravoyal to Poonamalle have been floated under the National Highways Authority of India – the first phase of this 23.2-km elevated highway up to Sriperumbudur along the Bengaluru-chennai Expressway.

The first 8.14 km stretch would extend from the proposed double-level cloverleaf interchange at Maduravoyal to Chennai’s Outer Ring Road near Poonamallee. It would also include some interventions at NH-48. With an estimate of ₹1,241 crore, the project will be designed on a hybrid annuity model.

According to the Senior Official from NHAI, Maduravoyal, Poonamallee, Irungattukottai, and Sriperumbudur will be the four entry and exit points. “The two-level cloverleaf at Maduravoyal will be the first-of-its-kind in India and provide uninterrupted connectivity to the port-Maduravoyal elevated expressway under construction so that the port-bound cargo vehicles can have a smooth passage,” added the official.

Thus, the official indicated that the development works for the Maduravoyal-Poonamallee stretch would probably commence sometime this financial year, while the second phase, Poonamallee-Sriperumbudur, has been postponed for syncing with the 52.94-km Metro corridor proposed by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) from Poonamallee to the upcoming Parandur airport.

There is very close coordination on the required integration between the elevated highway and the Metro rail line. In the present plans, both infrastructures will run as a double-decker up to Sriperumbudur, where the highway will terminate. The Metro line will then continue along NH-4 to Neervalur before branching off towards Parandur airport.

This 27.9-km stretch is part of CMRL’s first phase and will be constructed between Poonamallee and Sunguvarchatram through the Kuthambakkam bus terminus. The cost of this corridor, consisting of 14 stations, is pegged at ₹8,770 crore.
