India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection crossed an all-time high of ₹2.01 lakh crore during May 2025 at 16.4% year-on-year growth, according to figures put out by the government on Sunday. This follows a record ₹2.37 lakh crore mop-up in April.
Out of the total May collections, ₹1.50 lakh crore were through domestic transactions a 13.7% increase year-on-year and ₹51,266 crore came from imports with a good 25.2% increase.
The gross collection bracket consists of ₹35,434 crore of CGST, ₹43,902 crore of SGST, and ₹1.09 lakh crore of Integrated GST (IGST) Compensation Cess revenue was ₹12,879 crore.
After refunds totaling ₹27,210 crore, 4% less than the previous year’s corresponding period, net GST collection was at around ₹1.74 lakh crore, 20.4% higher than in May 2024 when the gross collection was ₹1.72 lakh crore.
However, growth was not evenly spread across the country. Though Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu experienced high growth rates of 17% to 25%, the remaining ones like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana experienced moderate growth of up to 6%. Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan had an average growth of around 10%.
Deloitte India Partner M S Mani also noted that the uneven growth reflects sectoral or seasonal variations. “The average growth is not equally indicated through the states, likely due to variances in the sectoral mix. A more granular, data-driven analysis is needed to unravel these trends,” he observed.
The stable performance of GST collections is proof of ongoing economic activity and compliance, but regional discrepancies require state-level information on tax drivers of performance.
