A step towards efficient commuter travel through metro lines, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will develop a skywalk that joins the Vadapalani stations of Phase I and Phase II. The skywalk or elevated walkway will help commuters easily transfer between the two corridors without leaving the station area.

The skywalk forms part of the ₹63,246 crore Phase II metro expansion. The initial section from Poonamallee to Porur opens later this year, followed by the Porur–Vadapalani–Kodambakkam section in 2026. Vadapalani is a busy interchange where the current 54-km Phase I and the future 118.9-km Phase II networks connect.

The planned skywalk will be around 130 metres in length and six metres in width, providing an undercover walkway linking directly the ticketing concourses of both phases. Construction is estimated to cost ₹10 crore, which is included in the overall project budget.

CMRL officials said tenders have been floated, and a contractor is expected to be finalized within three months. Construction will take another six months, aiming for completion before the Vadapalani Phase II station becomes operational next year.

“This is a vital step in ensuring smooth interchange,” a CMRL official stated. “Since Vadapalani is one of the few junctions between the two phases, it is essential that we provide infrastructure that allows for hassle-free transfers.”

Daily travelers have hailed the decision. Shilpa Ramesh, who commutes from Vadapalani to Meenambakkam for work, said the skywalk would be a big relief. “No one wants to exit one station and walk on the road to change lines. A covered skywalk is the best solution. CMRL should consider building similar links at other interchange stations,” she said.

The skywalk project marks the first step towards integrating Chennai Metro’s old and new networks, aiming to create a unified, efficient transit experience for city commuters.
