While Chennai’s second airport is in Parandur, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is working on a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) that looks to provide quick and fast connectivity in the remaining months and years.
CMRL has realised two corridors for the RRTS:
🔹 Chennai Airport – Parandur through Sriperumbudur
🔹 Chennai – Kancheepuram – Vellore through Parandur
These trains will be capable of running at semi-high-speed of 100-120 kmph, the stations on the RRTS line from each other will be about 10 km away from one another, unlike traditional metro lines which have stations every 1-2 km. This will greatly shorten the travel time between Chennai and Parandur.
More RRTS Corridors In State Budget Proposed
Tamil Nadu State Budget 2025 has identified three other RRTS corridors for feasibility studies to ease intercity travel:
✔️ Chennai — Chengalpattu — Tindivanam — Villupuram
✔️ Chennai – Kancheepuram – Vellore
✔️ Coimbatore – Tiruppur – Erode – Salem
Metro extension is under consideration
CMRL is also working on metro rail connectivity between Chennai Airport and Sriperumbudur (which could then pick up the RRTS to take its routes further to Parandur). A feasibility study for this project is due to be initiated soon.
“In these contexts, CMRL plans to develop a perfectly integrated transportation system for the announced 2nd Airport at Parandur to further increase regional connectivity.
