Ministry of Steel organized a day-long Chintan Shivir in Bengaluru recently, wherein prominent steel players were present to brainstorm for the future of India’s steel sector. The event was held at Hotel Taj West End with top Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) officials from the Ministry of Steel in attendance.

In attendance, as Chief Guest was Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, Minister of State for Steel, and addressing the event virtually was the Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy. Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Shri Sandeep Poundrik and senior executives from CPSEs were also part of the session.

Discussions during the event honed in on key areas for the steel sector, encompassing subjects such as iron ore utilization, National Steel Policy 2025, specialty steel production, and ways to cut costs and improve operational efficiency. These were discussions to align the sector of the government’s vision for Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Speaking on witnessing the progress of the steel industry, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma emphasized self-dependence and reaffirmed the commitment of India to expand its steel production up to 300 million tonnes by 2030. He stressed that in the steel sector, as in other sectors of the economy, domestic production must increase and local iron ore must be utilized better, while high-grade specialty steels must be developed to suit important industries.

Addressing the congregation, Shri Sandeep Poundrik stressed that we always need to improve and innovate. “Having this platform enables us to increase efficient workings, tap new opportunities and foster sustainable industry growth,” he added.

Among the key takeaways was the unveiling of the official website for India Steel 2025, a flagship event that will be held from April 24-26, 2025. 35 young CPSE managers were inducted as future leaders who would lead the charge on efficiency and cost optimization in the sector.

The concluding statement of the Chintan Shivir, reflecting the collective resolution of CPSEs to strengthen India’s global steel footprint, highlighted the strategic roadmap of the Indian steel sector to become competitive and future-ready.
