The Tamil Nadu people are in for the surprise of four-lane NH roads constructed that total 963 km. While an investment close to Rs 20,000 crore will have to be provided to complete it within two years, the overall infrastructural structure is going to be a very big fillip as 963 km of brand-new four-lane national highways will be created.

NHAI will head the project, and this will usher in a full-scale transformation in the road network of Tamil Nadu, which has a length of 6,805 kilometers presently. New four-lane roads will be one of the critical factors that can improve the state’s transportation network, as news reports indicate the number of toll plazas on national highways will increase from 72 to 90.

This 963-km extension is part of a more significant package of major highway expansion projects, making national highways jump from 2,735 km to 3,698 km. It is sure to bring down the traveling time and add to road safety for the commuter.

National highways in the state are under two-lane road coverage measuring 1,282 km and two-lane roads with paved shoulders 2,383 km, six lanes 384 km, and eight lanes 21 km. The construction currently going on 767 km, which will be completed within 12-15 months and bring a drastic upgrade in road infra.

Some of the major road projects include Vikravandi-Thanjavur (163 km), Mamallapuram-Puducherry East Coast Road (106 km), and the Gudipala to Sriperumbudur stretch of the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (106 km). In addition, the 135-km Dindigul-Theni-Kumuli and the 60-km Neraluru-Thorapalli Agraharam-Jittandahalli roads are also under construction, with 20 to 30% of the work already completed.

In the last decade, the toll revenues of national highways in Tamil Nadu were around Rs 26,000 crore. Roads have thus played a great role in Tamil Nadu’s economy. Ongoing projects are moving along smoothly, and it will not be long before Tamil Nadu sees smooth, faster travel across the state.
