Madurai Corporation is now embroiled in an expansion; the wards increased from 100 to 120.
A proposed boundary expansion map has been released, adding a new administrative zone to the city’s governance structure.

The expansion is part of efforts to accommodate Madurai’s growing population, which is estimated to have reached 18.72 lakh. Under the leadership of District Collector Sangeeta and Corporation Commissioner Dinesh Kumar, several study meetings were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of merging nearby areas into the corporation.

The plan involves integrating one town panchayat and 16 village panchayats into the corporation’s limits. These areas include Paravai (Town Panchayat), Karuppayurani, Othakadai, Narasingham, Kathakinaru, Chettikulam, Kovilpapakkudi, Alathur, Pachikulam, Virakanur, Nagamalai Pudukottai, Karadipatti, Yercudi Achampathu, Duvariman, Perungudi (area), Arumbanuar (area), and Kodikulam.

According to an official statement, the boundary expansion aligns with the Municipal Administration 2023 Amendment Act, which permits corporations to increase the number of wards based on population. For populations between 20 to 30 lakh, up to 120 wards can be created. The current expansion will also raise the number of administrative zones in the corporation from five to six.

While the wards’ boundaries are yet to be finalized, authorities have emphasized the need to account for geographical features like quarries and water bodies in the integrated areas. Public suggestions have also played a role in shaping the expansion plan, with demands to include Alagarkoil in the north, Madurai Kamaraj University in the west, and Keelapudur Chitpakam in the southwest under the corporation’s limits.

This expansion aims to improve administrative efficiency and accommodate Madurai’s rapid urbanization. This proposal has been sent to the government for final approval.

To put this plan into effect, the Madurai Corporation aims to strengthen its urban infrastructure and governance with a long-term approach to further development.
