3D printing is revolutionizing construction in India, offering speed, sustainability, and design flexibility. A 2,500 sq. ft. house, which traditionally takes four months, can now be built in just two weeks using this technology.
Chennai-based Kelvin6k recently created India’s first commercial onsite 3D-printed buildings at MES Tambaram for military use. The company also aims to complete a zero-cement building using geo-polymer mud. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad’s MiCoB completed 30 seaside cottages for a hotel chain in two months, compared to 5-6 months via conventional methods.
The process uses specially formulated concrete that minimizes waste, with only 1-2% material loss. Karnataka’s Ulsoor Bazaar Post Office and Telangana’s 3D-printed temple further highlight this innovation. Experts note its suitability for complex designs and remote areas. While costs are currently 10% higher than traditional methods, its sustainability and speed make it a promising solution for housing and defense projects.
