Centre Plans Major Revival of VISPL with Rs 4,000 Crore Investment, Says HD Kumaraswamy

The Union government is preparing a large-scale revival plan for the historic Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant, with Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy confirming a Rs 4,000 crore investment for the project. Speaking on Sunday, the minister said that efforts are underway to ensure the plant is modernised and capable of operating efficiently for the next four decades.

According to Kumaraswamy, a detailed project report for the first phase of development is now being prepared. Two companies have been tasked with drafting this DPR, focusing on critical technological upgrades and long-term sustainability. He added that the revival would take place in multiple phases and emphasised that the initiative is progressing with the full confidence and support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The minister also mentioned that he would return in January or February as the DPR for three major development sectors moves towards completion.

During his address, Kumaraswamy launched a strong attack on the Karnataka state government, accusing it of administrative inefficiency and financial mismanagement. He pointed out that although budget allocations were made, several departments failed to utilise even 45 percent of the allotted funds. He described this as a sign of the government’s failing performance and lack of proper governance.

He further criticised the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state. Citing recent incidents, Kumaraswamy highlighted the seizure of a mobile phone from a terrorist inside Parappana Agrahara prison, a robbery case involving a police constable, and multiple thefts reported in Davanagere, Vijayapura and Bengaluru. He argued that such cases reflect a collapsing system that needs urgent corrective action.

Responding to the Congress party’s claims about returning to power in 2028, the minister dismissed the idea as unrealistic. He instead urged the government to address pressing local issues, including the growing threat of wild animals in certain districts. He added that monetary compensation alone cannot replace human lives lost in such attacks.

The revival of VISPL is expected to bring renewed industrial activity, employment generation and long-term economic impact for the region, marking a significant step in India’s broader steel sector development.
