Vijayawada International Airport is gearing up for a major infrastructure upgrade with the inauguration of a new integrated terminal building (NITB) expected in the next two to three months. Union Minister for Civil Aviation, K. Ram Mohan Naidu, announced that the new terminal will mark a significant milestone in enhancing passenger handling capacity and improving overall travel experience for fliers.
The modern facility is designed to accommodate the growing air traffic at Vijayawada, which has emerged as a key aviation hub in Andhra Pradesh. Once operational, the new terminal is expected to streamline services, reduce congestion, and create a more seamless journey for passengers.
In addition to the terminal expansion, the airport is set to witness a major boost in connectivity. New domestic flights are scheduled to be launched to Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Kochi, and Pune, opening up stronger links to important economic and cultural hubs. On the international front, Vijayawada is preparing to connect with Singapore, a move expected to enhance trade, tourism, and business travel opportunities for the region.
Highlighting the government’s efforts to make air travel more accessible, Minister Naidu also inaugurated a UDAN Yatri Café at the airport. With this addition, Vijayawada has become the seventh airport in the country to offer affordable food and drinking water under the flagship UDAN scheme, furthering the vision of making regional aviation more passenger-friendly.
Airport Director M. Lakshmikant Reddy, who was present during the event, shared updates on the construction progress and emphasized the strategic importance of the new terminal in meeting future growth.
Minister Naidu further reflected on India’s broader aviation journey, noting that the number of operational airports in the country has more than doubled over the last decade, rising from 74 to 160. This rapid expansion is creating unprecedented connectivity for smaller towns while supporting the country’s economic growth.
With the new Vijayawada terminal set to open soon, passengers can look forward to enhanced services, improved infrastructure, and stronger links to both domestic and international destinations.
