Vijayawada is set to witness a significant transformation in its urban mobility landscape as the city rolls out a comprehensive City Roads Improvement Programme under the public private partnership model. The Rs 171 crore initiative aims to upgrade 19 key roads, enhancing traffic flow, pedestrian safety and overall civic infrastructure.
The project will focus on strengthening carriageways, modernising drainage systems, improving footpaths, redesigning medians and adding greenery along major stretches. Important corridors such as PVP Mall Road, GS Raju Road, HT Line Road and Gurunanak Colony Road are part of the first phase. Civic officials believe the improvements will ease congestion and create a safer commuting experience for thousands of daily road users.
The programme will be implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model, ensuring structured funding and accountability. Of the total project cost, Rs 55 crore has been earmarked for the initial development phase, which is expected to be completed within 12 months. The remaining funds will be released in phases based on project milestones. The selected private developer will also be responsible for operations and maintenance for a period of 10 years, ensuring sustained road quality and timely repairs.
Tenders for the project have already been floated, and once the contract is awarded, the developer will have six months to conduct detailed surveys and submit final designs. The full development works are scheduled to be completed within one year thereafter.
Urban planners view the initiative as a strategic step toward building resilient city infrastructure. By combining structured private participation with long term maintenance commitments, Vijayawada is positioning itself for smoother traffic movement, improved pedestrian infrastructure and a more sustainable urban future.
