The Greater Chennai Corporation (G Finance) has proposed a three-kilometer flyover with three lanes along Velachery Main Road, which is a significant attempt by the city to decongest the horrible traffic jams in South Chennai. This elevated corridor will connect the Five Furlong Road junction and the two critical hotspots coming up the Guru Nanak College junction.

This elevated structure is likely to decongest and alleviate congestion on one of the most crowded stretches of the city, with dimensions of 11 meters in width and unidirectional down ramps for a smooth and efficient flow of vehicles. One ramp, 5.5 meters wide, will allow vehicles from Five Furlong Road to head towards Guindy, while a 4-meter-wide ramp near Guru Nanak College will ease entry for those arriving from Guindy.

The ramp will extend approximately 300m from the Teacher Sardar Patel Road-Velachery Main Road, terminating at the Velachery Bypass. The structural design, including steel composite girders supported with columns and piers of any material, depending on the engineering requirements-means either steel or concrete.

To improve pedagogical accessibility and safety of walking in the area, the plan would also establish service roads 5.5 meters wide on both sides of the stretch, with 1.5 meters and 48 meters long.

The initiative comes after traffic studies showed the Five Furlong Road junction handles around 7,459 PCUs during peak hours, while the Guru Nanak College junction sees close to 7,742 PCUs. The new flyover is expected to significantly cut travel time for commuters heading to and from Guindy, 200-Feet Radial Road, and areas near Phoenix Mall.

GCC has already floated tenders for the construction, and this flyover is one of two major bridge projects announced by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2025–26.

Residents have welcomed the move. “It’s very difficult to reach Guindy or 200-Feet Road during weekends because of Phoenix Mall traffic,” said A Raja, a Velachery resident near Checkpost. “This flyover will be a huge relief.”

The project aims not just to ease daily congestion but also to support long-term urban mobility in one of Chennai’s fastest-growing zones.
