Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin virtually laid the foundation of sports infrastructure projects worth ₹ 64 crore across six districts today, as part of a major effort in improving sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. This has been fixated on the upliftment of sports facilities and the enhancement of youth participation in sports at grassroots levels.

The works of construction and renovation are earmarked for the following districts: Ariyalur, Coimbatore, Karur, Madurai, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai. According to the official release, this is coupled with the ongoing efforts of Tamil Nadu in creating an inclusive and accessible sports atmosphere in those patchy urban and semi-urban areas.

The announcement was made in the presence of the key state ministers such as E.V. Velu (Public Works), R. Rajendran (Youth Welfare and Sports Development), P. Moorthy (Commercial Taxes and Registration), and Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. Senior officials of the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department also attended the virtual foundation ceremony.

Detailed project specifications for each district have yet to be announced, but the ₹ 64 crore makes it part of the state’s growing investment in building and upgrading sporting infrastructure training grounds and stadiums, to indoor courts and multi-sport complexes.

This follows a broad policy focus on youth and sports development by the Tamil Nadu state government, as Udhayanidhi heads the department to become more active in unveiling schemes to identify youth athletes across the state, train them, and support facilities. This batch of infrastructure projects is expected to close the gaps that exist in facilities and nurture talent from rural and semi-urban pockets.

“Good infrastructure is important to attract the best athletes at the national and international levels. This is not just about buildings; it’s about building futures,” said the Deputy Chief Minister in a brief statement after the ceremony.

The projects are expected to begin shortly, with timelines and individual district-level project details to be shared in the coming weeks.
