Phase I of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Domestic Terminal Upgrade Opens to Passengers

The first phase of the domestic terminal upgrade at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has been completed and is now open to passengers, marking a significant step in the airport’s ongoing modernization drive. The upgraded facility was inaugurated on February 11, 2026, by senior officials of Adani Airport Holdings, signalling steady progress in strengthening airport infrastructure in Kerala.

Originally designed to handle 1.3 million passengers annually, the domestic terminal is currently managing nearly double that capacity. The newly completed phase focuses on expanding the terminal canopy and improving passenger movement areas to deliver a smoother and more comfortable travel experience. With passenger traffic witnessing consistent growth, the expansion aims to ease congestion and improve operational efficiency.

The canopy expansion has been planned in three phases, with Phase I now operational. Work on the remaining phases is expected to begin shortly. Once fully completed, the expanded infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance the airport’s ability to manage higher passenger volumes while maintaining service quality.

In addition to the landside improvements, a Rs 600 crore airside expansion project at Terminal 2 is currently underway. This includes strengthening runway associated infrastructure and enhancing aircraft handling capacity to meet increasing domestic and international demand. The combined upgrades reflect a broader strategy to position Thiruvananthapuram as a key aviation hub in South India.

Airport authorities stated that the revamp has been designed to create a modern, seamless and passenger friendly environment, integrating improved design aesthetics with better space utilization. The investment also underlines the long term commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
