Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, is all set to undergo a major transformation under the Urban Rejuvenation and City Beautification Scheme, with a total investment of Rs 100 crore announced in the 2023–24 Kerala State Budget. The initiative aims to enhance the city’s infrastructure, restore its aesthetic charm, and improve the overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
The Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) will supervise the implementation, while Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited will execute the projects. The focus areas include road improvement, public space development, and beautification of prominent locations across the city. This initiative is part of Kerala’s broader vision to make its capital a model for sustainable and visually appealing urban development.
Among the major projects, the Chacka–Shanghumukham Beach stretch will be beautified with floral landscapes, art installations, and seating areas, turning it into a vibrant recreational corridor. The LMS Church–Vellayambalam–Kowdiar–Peroorkada Road will also receive aesthetic upgrades, featuring organized pedestrian spaces and visual enhancements. These developments are expected to not only improve the city’s appearance but also boost tourism and local business activity.
Additionally, the VS Achuthanandan Park at Palayam will be developed at a cost of Rs 1.64 crore, offering better amenities and greener surroundings. The Jawahar Balabhavan’s “Playscape” project will revitalize the children’s activity zone, providing an innovative and safe environment for recreation.
The beautification plan also includes the rehabilitation of shopkeepers displaced due to the Vattiyurkavu Junction development, ensuring social inclusion as part of the city’s urban growth.
With this Rs 100 crore initiative, Thiruvananthapuram is poised to set new benchmarks in urban design and public infrastructure. The project not only reflects Kerala’s commitment to planned urban development but also reinforces Thiruvananthapuram’s position as one of India’s most livable and progressive cities.
