The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has invited tenders for the construction of the International Dugong Conservation Centre at Manora, Thanjavur, as part of the TN-SHORE project to enhance coastal resilience. Estimated at ₹41 crores, the centre will play a pivotal role in conserving the endangered dugong species and its fragile habitat in the Palk Bay region.
A unique dugong-shaped main building will stand at the centre of the conservation centre, representing the need to respect the protection of dugongs. A museum indicating the species’ ecological importance and a state-of-the-art 4D theatre will guarantee an immersive experience for the visitors. For research and conservation efforts, there will be laboratories at the center.
One of the key activities within the framework of the TN-SHORE project has been devised for the dual purposes of saving marine life as well as to develop the power of coastal ecosystems. The Centre will significantly support regional ecological balance, and increase public awareness for the dugong marine mammal considered close to extinction.
The Forest Department has scheduled a pre-bid meeting on 19 November wherein it will clarify the queries of all interested bidders who will tender proposals. All proposals are expected by December 6.
Completed, the International Dugong Conservation Centre would stand as one of the pinnacles of marine biodiversity protection in the State of Tamil Nadu, an important species such as the endangered dugong population whose numbers had declined steadily due to habitat destruction and other human activities.
