Tata Steel has announced a major investment of Rs 11000 crore in Jharkhand to develop advanced grade green steel at its Jamshedpur facility, marking a significant step in India’s transition towards low carbon manufacturing. The announcement was made by Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran in the presence of Tata Steel CEO T V Narendran and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The investment will focus on advanced steel production using low carbon technologies pioneered by the Tata Group. The company aims to strengthen its leadership in sustainable steelmaking while supporting India’s broader climate commitments. The new technology is expected not only to enhance operational efficiency at Jamshedpur but also to create a scalable model that could benefit other steel manufacturers across the country.
India’s steel sector plays a critical role in infrastructure, construction, automotive and industrial growth. With rising demand for high quality steel, the shift toward environmentally responsible production has become a strategic priority. Tata Steel’s latest move signals a long term commitment to balancing growth with sustainability, especially in a state like Jharkhand which has historically been central to India’s industrial development.
In addition to the steel investment, Tata Motors will invest in hydrogen powered truck projects at the Jamshedpur facility. The initiative is seen as strategically important for both domestic and global markets, as hydrogen mobility gains traction as a clean energy alternative in heavy transportation.
Chandrasekaran also stated that the Tata Group will constitute a panel of experts to explore further investment opportunities across sectors in Jharkhand, aligning with the state government’s development vision. The combined investments are expected to boost employment, attract private capital and strengthen Jharkhand’s position as a key hub for advanced manufacturing and sustainable industry in India.
