Punjab is set to witness a major industrial milestone as Tata Steel prepares to commence operations at its new manufacturing facility in Ludhiana from March. The project, with a revised investment of Rs 3,200 crore, reflects growing investor confidence in the state’s industrial policies and governance framework.
Spread across 115 acres near HiTech Valley, the upcoming plant will feature a 0.75 MTPA Electric Arc Furnace based steelmaking unit along with a rebar mill. The facility is designed to use 100 percent steel scrap as raw material, significantly lowering carbon emissions compared to conventional blast furnace operations. This environmentally responsible approach aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals and the steel industry’s transition toward greener production methods.
The Ludhiana unit is expected to generate employment for around 2,500 people, providing a strong push to local economic activity. Beyond direct jobs, the project is likely to create additional opportunities across logistics, ancillary manufacturing, services, and infrastructure support sectors.
For Tata Steel, the Ludhiana facility represents its second largest plant in India after Jamshedpur and marks its biggest investment in Punjab so far. The expansion underlines the company’s long term commitment to strengthening its domestic manufacturing footprint while catering to rising demand for construction grade steel products.
Industry observers note that the commissioning of the plant comes at a time when infrastructure development and real estate activity are driving steady steel demand across northern India. With modern technology, improved energy efficiency, and a strategic location advantage, the Ludhiana plant is positioned to play a vital role in meeting regional demand while contributing to sustainable industrial growth in Punjab.
