Tata Steel Kalinganagar has completed a significant milestone as the company marked 10 years of operations at its state-of-the-art facility in Odisha. Commissioned in 2015 with an initial capacity of three million tonnes per annum, the plant has transformed into one of India’s most technologically advanced steel hubs. Over the past decade, the facility has expanded to eight MTPA, backed by investments exceeding ₹50,000 crore, reflecting Tata Steel’s long-term commitment to strengthening India’s steel manufacturing capabilities.
Kalinganagar has emerged as a critical contributor to the domestic steel ecosystem with the production of more than 100 grades of steel catering to key sectors including automotive, infrastructure, engineering, and energy. The plant’s consistent scale-up has also reinforced Odisha as Tata Steel’s largest investment destination in the country. Over the last ten years, the company has channelled more than ₹1 lakh crore into various projects across the state, positioning Odisha as a central pillar of its long-term growth strategy.
A major differentiator for the Kalinganagar facility is its strong sustainability focus. The plant is certified under the Responsible Steel standard and operates as a zero effluent discharge facility. It has achieved 100 percent solid waste utilization, maintains 33 percent green cover within its operations, and has reduced freshwater consumption by 40 percent, showcasing the company’s integrated approach to ecological responsibility and industrial development.
Looking ahead, Tata Steel has set an ambitious path for the complex, with expansion plans underway to transform it into a 16 MTPA integrated steel production hub. This next phase is expected to propel the region’s industrial development, create new employment opportunities, and strengthen India’s position in the global steel supply chain.
Speaking on the milestone, Tata Steel CEO and Managing Director T. V. Narendran said the Kalinganagar plant stands today as a symbol of technological excellence, sustainability, and shared prosperity with the people of Odisha. With its continued expansion and focus on responsible growth, the facility is poised to play an even larger role in India’s steel future.
