Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced three major development initiatives in partnership with the World Bank, with a combined investment of approximately ₹3,420 crore (around $409.79 million). The announcement was made during the inauguration of the newly modernised Global Business Centre in Taramani, Chennai, which supports over 130 World Bank offices across 189 countries and provides employment to more than 1,500 people.

A key highlight of the new initiatives is the Women Employment and Security (WE-SAFE) project, aimed at increasing women’s participation in high-growth, non-agricultural sectors across Tamil Nadu. The state government has earmarked ₹1,185 crore for WE-SAFE over the next five years. The project focuses on empowering women through skill development, employment support, and safety initiatives, aligning with the state’s broader goal of inclusive growth.

Alongside WE-SAFE, two additional projects were announced. The first is a sustainable marine resource management program designed to enhance the livelihoods of coastal communities while preserving marine ecosystems. The second is Phase 2 of the Tamil Nadu Rural Rejuvenation Project, which focuses on rural development, infrastructure, and socio-economic upliftment in the state’s villages.

Chief Minister Stalin also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s longstanding partnership with the World Bank, which spans over five decades. This collaboration has previously delivered several landmark programs, including the Nutrition and Health Systems Projects, urban development schemes, road sector modernisation, the TNIAMWARM irrigation program, coastal disaster mitigation efforts, and a $190 million urban housing loan for economically weaker sections.

Speaking at the event, Stalin emphasised, “The World Bank’s support for Tamil Nadu goes beyond loans. It reflects a shared commitment to sustainable, equitable, and lasting progress.”

With these new projects, Tamil Nadu aims to strengthen its development model, focusing on social equity, sustainable resource management, and inclusive economic growth, reinforcing its position as a leading state in India’s development landscape.
