The Tamil Nadu government has shortlisted two locations near Hosur in Krishnagiri district for a proposed greenfield airport aimed at boosting the region’s manufacturing and logistics sectors. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will soon conduct a detailed study to finalize the site, as per multiple sources. Both shortlisted locations lie within a 20-km radius of Hosur.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin initiated the decision during a high-level meeting at the state secretariat. Earlier, a multi-disciplinary team from AAI and TIDCO evaluated the feasibility of four sites near Hosur, including Thogarai Agraharam, Shoolagiri, Dhasapalli, and an area near a private airstrip. Based on an interim report, two sites were selected for further evaluation, with the area near the private airstrip likely to be preferred for detailed assessment.
The government is also exploring negotiations with the private firm that owns the airstrip, but the purchase depends on securing the asset at a reasonable price. The proposed airport will be developed on 2,000 acres, with plans to handle up to three crore passengers annually.
CII Tamil Nadu State Council Chairman and Wheels India Ltd Managing Director Srivats Ram emphasized the project’s transformative potential. He stated, “This airport will serve as a critical node for business and logistics, fostering regional integration and creating a dynamic twin-city ecosystem with Bengaluru. It will also drive growth in neighbouring districts such as Dharmapuri and Salem, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s industrial and logistical position.”
Hosur, known as an automotive hub for decades, has recently diversified into advanced manufacturing, electronics, and electric vehicles. The proposed airport is expected to attract further investments and improve connectivity for industries in the region.
The project aligns with Tamil Nadu’s vision to enhance infrastructure and economic development. It also coincides with the Karnataka government’s exploration of a second airport for Bengaluru, potentially intensifying regional competition.
The greenfield airport project promises to transform Hosur into a pivotal economic and logistical hub, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s reputation as an industrial powerhouse and fostering cross-state collaborations.
