Tamil Nadu Road Development Company Moves Ahead with Final Phase of Chennai Peripheral Ring Road

The Chennai Peripheral Ring Road project has reached a crucial milestone as the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company initiated the tendering process for the final phase of this ambitious infrastructure corridor. This last stretch, covering 27.34 kilometres from Singaperumal Koil on GST Road to Poonjeri on East Coast Road, forms an essential part of the 133-kilometre ring road planned to enhance mobility around Chennai.

The final leg is envisioned as a 10-lane access-controlled expressway, which includes a six-lane main carriageway supported by two-lane service roads on both sides. Designed to redirect long-distance traffic away from Chennai’s congested radial roads, the corridor will act as a high-speed link connecting major national highways, suburban growth centres and emerging industrial clusters around the metropolitan region.

One of the key highlights of this phase is a proposed 1.8-kilometre elevated road beginning at the SH-49B junction. This structure will run along and partly above the existing route, cross Perumal Eri and eventually merge with the trumpet interchange under construction on NH-332A leading to ECR. Officials note that this seamless connection will play a pivotal role in ensuring uninterrupted movement between the ring road and the coastal corridor while safeguarding local traffic flow.

To support smooth and safe mobility, the project includes four major vehicular underpasses, eight light-vehicle underpasses for village-level access, six major bridges across low-lying areas and three dedicated animal and pedestrian underpasses. These elements collectively contribute to an access-controlled environment with reduced conflict points and enhanced safety for commuters, residents and wildlife.

The design also incorporates designated entry and exit ramps, upgraded junctions with acceleration and deceleration lanes, controlled median openings and modern road safety features such as crash barriers, delineators, LED blinkers and uniform lighting.

Environmental stewardship is another critical component. A recent survey identified 4,280 trees within the project boundary. Tamil Nadu Road Development Company plans to retain as many trees as possible and safeguard them with NJW-type crash barriers. At least 200 trees will be transplanted, and fresh landscaping will be taken up once construction concludes.

With tenders now floated, the final phase of the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road moves closer to reality. This development marks a significant step in strengthening Chennai’s long-term growth, connectivity and regional development.
