The Tamil Nadu government has announced the construction of two new important flyovers at Velachery and Korukkupet, which is a significant step to solve the rising traffic woes in Chennai. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced the projects while presenting the state budget for 2025-26 on Friday.

100-Feet Road to be Decongested by Velachery Flyover

The new corridor, which will be built on an elevated pier, is a four-lane facility and will connect Velachery Bypass (100-Feet Road) with Gurunanak College on Velachery Main Road over a distance of three kilometers. Estimated to cost ₹310 crore, the project aims to decongest traffic bottlenecks in the area due to the rising number of vehicles, encroachments on the service roads, and lack of parking space for commercial establishments.

The Velachery Bypass and Velachery Main Road have been witnessing heavy vehicular traffic during peak hours for a long time. At ₹103.3 crores per kilometer, the new flyover will enhance connectivity and benefit nearly seven lakh residents of Guindy and Velachery.

An elevated four-lane flyover for a 3.2-km stretch from Saidapet to Teynampet is also under construction as part of the state government’s measures to decongest roads in Chennai.

The government had also announced a road overbridge (ROB) in Korukkupet (to be constructed by the Greater Chennai Corporation in association with Southern Railway) in addition to the Velachery flyover. Travel time will reduce for two-thirds of one’s journey and the project will reduce congestion for around one lakh residents in the area. The ₹70-crore project would improve connectivity with fewer delays in traveling.

MGSMT Scheme For Development Of Roads In Rural Areas

While the Government is concentrating on urban infrastructure, there is equal emphasis on rural road development. In 2025-26, ₹2,200 crore to upgrade 6,100 kilometers of rural roads under the ‘Mudhalvarin Grama Salaigal Membattu Thittam’ (MGSMT) scheme. Furthermore, ₹120 crore from the State Finance Commission Grants will be earmarked for the maintenance of village panchayat and panchayat union roads on an ongoing basis.

These infrastructure projects will also be aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion and enhancing road quality both in urban and rural areas, said the Tamil Nadu government.
