To address traffic congestion and enhance public transport facilities, the Tambaram Corporation has said it will construct a new bus terminal along the National Highway at an estimated cost of ₹6.5 crore.

Tambaram is an important railway terminal and an entry point for Chennai, with serious passenger movement every day. Many of the trains headed south stop at Tambaram, after which commuters depend on buses to take them where they need to go. But it is not large enough to handle the number of people who take the bus, which gets extremely congested, especially during peak times.

One of the two pertinent issues is the encroachment (roadside vendors) near the bus stop. Big buses are seen to stop on the National Highway for boarding alighting passengers as parking space is not available.

To solve the issue the Tambaram Corporation along with the district administration is planning to construct a total of 198 meters long new bus terminal. The tender for the project will be floated on March 7 and the cost has been estimated at ₹6.55 crore. They have set a deadline for completion by September this year.

On Wednesday, Chengalpattu District Collector Arun Raj surveyed the proposed site of construction and went through the plans with corporation officials. The new terminal will alleviate long-standing traffic challenges in the area and improve the commuting experience for thousands of passengers.
