Sivakasi–Aruppukottai Road to be Upgraded into Four-Lane; New High-Level Bridge at Veeracholan Announced

The road infrastructure of Virudhunagar district is set for a major boost with two significant announcements from State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu. He confirmed that the Sivakasi–Aruppukottai highway will soon be upgraded into a four-lane stretch, while also laying the foundation stone for a new high-level bridge across the Kiruthamal river at Veeracholan.

Speaking at the event in the presence of Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra, the Minister said that tenders for the Sivakasi–Aruppukottai road widening project have already been floated, and work is scheduled to begin shortly. Once completed, this stretch will become a vital four-lane highway, seamlessly connecting Srivilliputtur and Rameswaram via Tiruchuli. The project is also expected to improve links with key corridors such as Madurai–Cochin, Madurai–Thoothukudi, Madurai–Kanniyakumari, and Madurai–Rameswaram highways, paving the way for stronger trade and faster economic development in the region.

Highlighting the significance of road infrastructure in Tiruchuli constituency, Mr. Thennarasu noted that the area is intersected by three major rivers—Gundar, Therkkar, and Kiruthamal—making better bridge connectivity a long-standing demand of the local population. The new high-level bridge across the Kiruthamal river, sanctioned at a cost of ₹10.64 crore under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), is expected to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow even during floods. This will provide reliable access for people traveling from Veeracholan and surrounding villages to Madurai, Chennai, Parthibanur, and Paramakudi.

The Minister also pointed out that the existing causeway across the Kiruthamal river was constructed in the 1960s and has long been inadequate to meet the region’s growing transportation needs. The new bridge is set to resolve these issues and provide modern connectivity for commuters, farmers, and traders.

With multiple high-level bridges already underway in Tiruchuli, coupled with the Sivakasi–Aruppukottai four-lane expansion, these developments mark a transformative step toward improving mobility, enhancing trade, and accelerating economic growth across Virudhunagar district.
